This original design is inspired by the historic Rodman guns stationed at Fort Jefferson in Dry Tortugas National Park. Rodman guns were large, smoothbore, muzzle loading cannons developed during the mid 19th century by Union Army ordnance officer Thomas Jackson Rodman. Known for their durability and massive size, these cannons played a critical role in coastal defense during the Civil War era (we’re huge history buffs here at pin hive).
Fort Jefferson, located about 70 miles west of Key West, Florida, remains one of the largest brick structures in the Western Hemisphere. Though never completed or engaged in battle, it served as a military outpost, prison, and naval base, its cannons now stand as reminders of American military engineering and coastal history.
While this pin design pays homage to the Rodman guns and Fort Jefferson’s historical legacy, it is an artistic representation originally created by Pin Hive and is not affiliated with the National Park Service.
This pin is part of our Dry Tortugas Series, a tribute to one of the most remote and captivating National Parks in the United States. Like all of our products, it is ethically produced in small to medium batches. We work with a manufacturing partner that prioritizes safe working conditions, environmental mindfulness, and fair practices.
While traditional pin making isn’t eco friendly by default, we take active steps to reduce our impact. Each pin contributes to environmental restoration
